What can I say about our native Ramsons, often called wild garlic? If you have ever walked in a wood in spring, when the delicate garlic smell is all around, tasted Ramsons sandwiches, or exclaimed over the exquisite heads of starry white flowers, you'll know this is one ground-covering native well worth having. Thanks due to a woodland peace camp somewhere in Scotland for providing the stock!

TRUE ALOE Aloe vera

So valuable medicinally and in cosmetics that to list its uses would require a book. But for starters, keep this house plant in the kitchen where it is on hand to treat burns and scalds instantly with its healing sap.

ST. JOHNS CHAMOMILE Anthemis sancta-johanna Height MEDIUM

The flowers are orange-gold, and long lasting. Plant away from A. tinctoria, because they tend to hybridise.

CHERVIL Anthriscus cerefolium

Cool, fresh and flavoursome - this salad herb with mild anise taste is preferred by many trendy chefs (but don't let that put you off) and has medicinal value too.

HORSERADISH Armoracia rusticana

Large strappy leaves for foliage effect, but its the roots we're interested in. Once established, lift sections of root to grate for fresh horseradish sauce - incomparable with meat or to add a zing to dressings and mrinades; medicinal too. This vigorous plant should be given plenty of space and used well - why go to the supermarket?

SOUTHERNWOOD, LADS LOVE, APPLERINGY, OLD MAN, MAIDENS RUIN, GARDE-ROBE Artemisia abrotanum Height MEDIUM but pruned to size annually

If you grow no other herb, grow this one, not because you can eat it (it's bitter), nor for its undoubted value as an insect repellent, nor yet for its many medicinal properties, but because it exudes magic and the scent will stay with you all your life. Everyone who smells it smiles in remembrance of someone - a parent, a granny, an old and loved friend. Pass it on to your children's children . There is no herb to compare with it, and it is always selling out.

ABSINTHE, WORMWEOOD, CERNOBYL Artemisia absinthium Height PRETTY TALL

FRENCH TARRAGON Artemisia dracunculus Height FAIRLY LOW, MAINLY BECAUSE YOU KEEP EATING IT

I first met this plant growing on the sea wall of an Essex estuary, and it was the start of my love affair with Artemisias. There's something unaccountably special about this rare, silvery native.

YOMOGI Artemisia princeps Height MEDIUM

This Japanese culinary herb is used mainly in the preparation of a sweet dish, but I have tried it as a substitute for tarragon and find its flavour acceptable if not as delicate. Unlike tarragon, though, it grows fast!

DWARF ARTEMISIA Artemisia schmidtiana nana Very small or creeping

Exquisite dwarf Artemisia with feathery, silver foliage. This plant is ideal for the rock garden, or container.

OLD WOMAN Artemisia stelleriana Very small or creeping

North American medicinal plant valuable for attracting butterflies

PLEURISY ROOT Asclepias tuberosa NEW! Height PRETTY TALL

RED ORACHE Atriplex patula rubra Dramatically tall

Attractive, tall edible plant, whose deep red leaves are cooked like spinach.

MASTERWORT Astrantia major 'Variegata'

A classic cottage garden perennial which is diuretic and has roots formerly used as a purgative. The exquisite, papery flowers dry well for winter decoration. This variety has attractive, divided dream and green foliage.

A very showy and spectacular annual thistle, which is used in dyeing to yield the orange colour known from the robes of Buddhist monks. Large yellow flowerheads.

CARAWAY Carum carvi Height PRETTY TALL

Flowers valued by organic gardeners as they attract the tiny wasps which control caterpillars by parasitising them. After, the edible seeds are used in baking and cookery. They are also a great digestive aid.

Shaggy-headed, thistle-like flowers in bright yellow; a dramatic border perennial excellent for dried flower arrangements

PERENNIAL CORNFLOWER Centaurea montana Height MEDIUM

The Perennial Blue Cornflower; use flowers and petals in salads and add to fine tea for an exquisite, light tea best without milk.

GREATER KNAPWEED Centuarea scabiosa Height FAIRLY TALL

This spectacular native has big purple flowers very attractive to bees and butterflies, and similar properties to cornflower.

RED VALERIAN Centranthus ruber Height MEDIUM

Red Valerian (which isn't actually Valerian at all) is a pretty perennial for walls and dry borders, whose flowers are very attractive to bees and butterflies and whose leaves are edible.

GOOD KING HENRY Chenopodium bonus-henricus Height FAIRLY LOW

What a lovely name. Use the young shoots as asparagus substitute and the leaves as spinach - nutritious, tasty and reliably perennial! Nothing whatever to do with King Henry though.

TREE SPINACH Chenopodium giganteum Height TALL

A rather tasty find; an annual (we think) relative of Fat Hen, which yields shocking pink central leaves and shoots all year. They look rather intimidating in salads, are very nutritious, and are delectable stir-fried, including the tender flowering shoots

OPPOSITE-LEAVED GOLDEN SAXIFRAGE Chrysosplenium oppositifolium Very small or creeping

Ground-covering native for damp places, with golden flowers and foliage. Very pretty, especially in early spring.

BLACK COHOSH, SQUAWROOT Cimcifuga racemosa Height TALL

SAFFRON CROCUS Crocus sativus Height FAIRLY LOW

Late-flowering crocus, famed for the red flower pistils which are used to flavour and colour rice and sweet dishes, and are also valued as an orange dye and in Chinese medicine. A must for natives of Saffron Walden.

CARDOON & GLOBE ARTICHOKE Cynara cardunculus & C. cardunculus scolymus

For the first time we are offering these dramatiuc border plants with huge, thistel-like heads. Globe artichokes are usually grown for the edible flower bracts and receptacle, while cardoons (whose smaller heads may also be eaten) are cultivated for the delicious blanched shoots. However globe artichokes also contain cynarin, which is used medicinally for liver disorders and to reduce cholesterol.
